E-Recycling Law in Effect January 1, 2012. Is Your Business Prepared?

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

On January 1, 2012, a new state law in New York goes into effect requiring all commercial businesses to properly dispose of their old electronic at a recycling facility.

Recycling 1 million laptops saves energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 US homes in 1 year, (CrainsNewYork.com).

E-Recycle, the official term for properly disposing electronics at a certified electronics recycling facility, applies to everything from hard drives to keyboards, monitors to cell phones, and everything in between.

If you’re a commercial business owner, your company must comply with this law or you could face ample fines.

“Toxins found in electronic items, such as lead and mercury, may pose risks to human health or the environment if mismanaged at the end of their lives, according to officials at the Environmental Protection Agency,” (CrainsNewYork.com).

Suzanne Ruszinski, director of the EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery said “by keeping used electronics out of landfills, we can recover precious metals and materials and reduce the environmental impacts and energy demands from mining and manufacturing,” (CrainsNewYork.com).

It’s simple: don’t throw your electronic hardware in the garbage after January 1st. Make sure you properly dispose of your electronic hardware with a company like Boro-Wide Recycling, who will pick up your waste and dispose of it following state green law guidelines. Call our office at (718) 326-7149 to schedule a pick up today!

Here are a few tips provided by CrainsNewYorkBusiness.com, to comply with the new green law in effect January 1, 2012:

  • DESTROY HARD DRIVES. Hiring a service provider, like Boro-Wide Recycling to shred your hard drives, diskettes, CD's, and DVD's is the most secure way to dispose of them. We will also provide- upon completion of each shredding service- a certificate of destruction should you need proof that you follow the new law.
  • WORK DIRECTLY WITH AN E-RECYCLER. A specialty e-recycling company—like Boro-Wide Recycling—generally offers the most cost-effective pricing for collection and recycling of electronics. Using a building management or garbage removal company can result in unnecessary markups on recycling fees.
  • INSTITUTE A COST-EFFECTIVE PROGRAM FOR YOUR OFFICE BUILDING. Spread the word to your neighbors and encourage them to join you in making sure electronic disposal is handled correctly. You will generally save fees by coordinating e-recycling among more than one business with Boro-Wide Recycling.

Creating Jobs for Americans by Raising the Recycling Rate

Unemployment in America has been the topic of conversation for quite some time. Also on the list of trending topics is the importance of going green. Merge the two and you have the latest conversation, creating jobs by raising the recycling rate!

A large influx of US jobs may come from the recycling industry, “if the nation can increase its recycling rate,” says a recent report “More Jobs, Less Pollution: Growing the Recycling Economy in the US” (wasterecyclingnews.com). The report notes that nearly 1.5 million more recycling jobs than were around in 2008 would be create if the national recycling rate reached 75% by 2030.

Not only will a higher recycling rate mean reduced pollution and improved public health, it now can mean stable employment bases. The report states that “the 75% national recycling rate also would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 276 million metric tons by 2030,” which is equivalent to 72 coal-fired power plants or taking 50 million cars off the road (wasterecyclingnews.com).

Allen Hershkowitz, senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council said “even if we got to 50% [recycling rate], we would still reduce 100 million tons of global warming pollution, and that’s substantial… I don’t want people to get hung up on the 75% number because that’s aspirational, it’s not prescriptive. What it’s saying is higher recycling rates produce, in general, 10 to 20 times more jobs than combustion or landfilling with great benefits to the environment,” (wasterecyclingnews.com).

Increasing America’s recycling rate along with decreasing the amount of waste placed in landfills will reduce greenhouse gases and create jobs.

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp. is a leading full-service provider of progressive and innovative recycling and waste management services. Our services assist construction and demolition customers as well as commercial and residential customers in reducing disposal costs, strengthening recycling programs and diverting waste from landfills. Quick Holiday Cleaning Tips & $25 Off a 5-Yard Container!

With Thanksgiving just a few hours away, many people are rushing around trying to get their house in tip-top shape! Here are a few tips for a quick holiday cleaning that will leave your guests with the same “wow” factor as if you spent hour’s housecleaning.

Prioritize your cleaning. Concentrate on the public areas like the family room, bathroom and dining room where your guests will be spending most of their time. Take a timer into each room with you and set it to 15 minutes. Get the “must-do’s” done first, like replenishing the toilet paper, vacuuming the carpet and wiping down the dining room table, and then if there is leftover time do the extras like scrubbing the tub or dusting each picture frame. Using this technique will allow you to get all the necessities done in a short amount of time!

Hiding clutter can be difficult, but here’s the “hail Mary pass” of housecleaning: cover up the mess when you can’t get rid of it. If you don’t have enough time to go through each room, discarding of the clutter you no longer need, neatly put it in empty laundry baskets or boxes and put those in closets or bedrooms no one will be seeing. Shut the doors to rooms and closets your guests need not see and keep your cleaning simple!

Look around and see your house the way your guests will, to make sure you haven’t overlooked anything. If most of your guests will be spending a majority of their time in the living room, sit on the couch and look around. Does the TV need dusting? Are there dust bunnies in the corner of the room? Are there stains on the carpet that need to be cleaned or covered? Seeing things from their vantage point will help you prioritize what needs to be done first. Also, take a look at your front door entrance. What will your guests see as they stand there waiting for you to open the door? Broken umbrellas? Spider webs? Junk mail? Clean it up as this is the first impression your guests will have.

The bathroom is the one room where bad housekeeping can really gross out your guests! The must do’s are relatively east to accomplish, and should be left to last minute so nobody in your family can mess it up before your guests arrive. Scrub your toilet bowl with a scrub brush and wipe down the seat and rim with disposable Clorox wipes. As for the sink and countertop, focus on making them sparkle! No one likes to see your leftover toothpaste and soap residue. Spray down the mirrors with a glass cleaner and break out a new bottle of liquid soap. Place fresh hand towels close by and replace the hanging bath towels. Last, but not least, keep extra toilet paper in an obvious place and empty the trash. A clean bathroom can make a big difference!

A few last minute things to think about: where are your guests going to hang their coats and bags? Do you want them walking to a bedroom, or would you rather put up a foldable coat rack in the foyer for easy access? Are your floors clean? Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to get them spotless before guests arrive. Vacuum the rugs and do a quick Swiffer wipe over the kitchen and wood floors, but cut it there. The floors are going to get filthy with the foot traffic of all your guests anyways, so no need to go crazy!

Are you planning on doing a big cleaning?  Boro-Wide Recycling is offering $25 off any 5 yard container for a limited time only! Order your container today by calling Boro-Wide Recycling at 718-416-1656 and give them your coupon code to receive the special discount!Click HERE for more information.

Largest Solar Landfill Cap In The World Opens in Atlanta, Georgia

This October on the South Side of Atlanta, a solar farm opened on Republic Services’ Hickory Ridge Landfill.

The innovative facility is the largest solar plant in Georgia and the largest solar landfill cap in the world according to Andy Keith, an environmental specialist for Republic.

Construction on the 48-acre site, Hickory Ridge, began in earnest in September 2010. “Keith says the site was chosen due to its unique combination of attributes: the timing of its closure, its proximity to a major metropolitan area, and its large south and west facing slopes (preferable for optimal collection of the sun’s rays)” (Waste360.com).

Keith also says the solar cap is made possible through the use of several technologies. “The 6,974 individual photovoltaic laminates are remarkably thin and flexible, enabling them to flex and settle with the landfill without compromising function. Each generates 144 watts,” (Wase360.com).
The cap also relies on thermoplastic polyolefin, a membrane material produced by Carlisle SynTec. Keith says “Though it is new to the landfill world, it has been in use in green roofs for years,” (waste360.com). The membrane covers the entire cap and also is used to encapsulate the million feet of wiring that runs over the surface of the hill, connecting the panels to four large inverters at the base. Once there the electricity is converted from DC to AC and passed to the Georgia Power grid.

The facility generates just over one megawatt (1,000 kilowatts), enough to power 224 homes (Waste360.com).

Since 1997, communities across the country have joined together on November 15th to celebrate America Recycles Day! America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the US.

“I Recycle” is again the theme of America Recycles Day. Millions of Americans had pledged to increase their recycling habits at home and at work over the 14 year initiative dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at work, at home and on the go.

What are you doing to support the efforts? If you’re unsure what you can do, visit AmericaRecyclesDay.org and click on “Join An Event.” Here, you can choose to join an already existing campaign. Not everyone can take on the commitment required to organize and host an America Recycles Day event on their own! Foruntately, you can still have a huge impact on the success of recycling by simply showing up for an event that your community organizers have arranged. All you have to do is enter your zip code and choose an event!
