How To Practice the 3 R's In The Office

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Whether you're at home, school or work, it's important to act in environmentally conscious ways. When it comes to recycling in the office, or any work environment for that matter, we are often so busy or focused on our work load that we forget to do something as simple as recycle our old or unused items. But that doesn't mean it can't be done! With help from the National Environment Agency, we've put together a few ways that you can practice the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) when you're in the office:

Reduce:
  • Bring your own coffee mug rather than use styrofoam cups each day.
  • Make only a few copies of documents that employees can share rather than printing one for each individual.
  • Focus on sending messages via email or other Internet applications instead of through written memos.
  • Order just enough food and drinks when hosting a meeting, seminar or conference.
Reuse:
  • Reuse envelopes when sending mail internally.
  • Use the back of old papers to take notes instead of using a clean sheet.
Recycle:
  • Implement a recycling program in the office by making recycling bins accessible to your employees.
  • Create separate bins for different recyclable products and label them so there is no question about whether or not an item belongs there.
How will you encourage your fellow employees to practice the 3 R's in your office? Visit us on Facebook and let us know!

Keeping Cool Without A/C

Throughout the summer, our air conditioners are one of the most commonly used appliances in our homes. Each and every day, we rely on these systems to manage our comfort and keep our homes free from the sweltering heat that is waiting for us outside. And since we rely on them so heavily, we often disregard the amount of energy we use every time we hit the “on” switch and leave them running for hours. To help you keep cool while reducing the amount of energy you use, we’ve compiled a list of ways that you can beat the heat without relying on your A/C:

  1. Close your windows – Though you might think opening your windows will bring fresh air into your home, keep them shut even on the hottest of days. The truth is, opening the windows will actually make your home warmer since the hot summer air will have access to the inside.
  2. Use fans Fans can be your greatest source of cool air in the summer if used properly. Between a mix of ceiling fans and stand-alone fans, you’re bound to feel just as cool as you would with your A/C. And don’t forget to take advantage of a breezy night; set one fan facing in on the side of your home receiving the wind to bring cool air into your home.
  3. Turn off the lights Did you know that light bulbs can produce just as much heat as they do light? On hot summer days, keep the lights off for as long as possible to minimize the amount of heat that radiates off light bulbs.
Now that we’ve given you some tips on how to keep cool, which will you use this summer? Visit us on our Facebook page and let us know!

Recycling Organic Waste in New York City

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

According to the New York Times, two Sanitation Department employees have set out to improve recycling habits in New Yorkers. Haley Rogers and Lisa Burnie-McDermott currently work and travel together to convince New York City residents to separate orange peels, eggshells and other organic waste from the rest of their trash. Although the two do not physically collect the trash themselves, they visit homes, manage hotline calls and even monitor when garbage is being sorted at transfer stations to educate and assist others with disposal procedures.

Working on behalf of New York City’s two year organic collection pilot program, Rogers and Burnie-McDermott seek to have most of New York’s food waste transported to composting sites rather than landfills. As stated by the two environmental experts, the outcome of increased composting would not just lead to a healthier environment; additionally, if New Yorkers successfully come together and monitor how they dispose of their trash, they will also help reduce the rat population in surrounding neighborhoods.

The organics collection program is currently running in all five boroughs and has been implemented in over 300 schools. With such a large reach, members of the sanitation department hope that the program will highly influence residents to make an effort to recycle their organic trash. According to the article, if the pilot program proves to be successful by next summer, the sanitation department will approach the City Council and suggest it be expanded.

As new versions of electronics and other gadgets are introduced, we tend to take the ones we already have and toss them to the side. In fact, all too often our old cell phones, computers, video games and more end up under the bed or in our closets, collecting dust for years to come.

When it comes time to finally let go of our once beloved electronics, many people are unsure of whether they belong in the trash or the recycling bin due to the nature of their composition. With help from Mashable, we've put together a few ways that you can dispose of your old electronics in environmentally friendly ways:

Tech Company Recycling Programs:
Evidently, most big tech companies have their own recycling programs specifically designed for those who need to dispose of their old products. For example, Apple will accept old or unwanted products that you no longer use and will either recycle it for you or send you an Apple Store Gift Card if the product still has any remaining value.

Donate:
There are several non-profit and refurbishing programs that will happily accept unwanted items and distribute them to those who need them. Check out Cell Phones for Soldiers, Call2Recycle or the Verizon HopeLine if you're looking to donate any old cell phones.

Trade Ins:
Several websites provide the option for you to sell or trade in your old gadgets for money or gift cards. If your product still works and could be of use to someone else, consider this option and you'll get something in return!

DIY Projects:
Last but not least, if you can't bring yourself to part with your device, repurpose it into an item that you can continue to use!

Composting Tips: Materials to Compost

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

By definition, compost is decayed organic material that is often used to improve soil in a garden by working as a fertilizer. As we continue our efforts to go green and be environmentally conscious, many people have even begun to practice the process of composting right in their own backyard. Especially for those who enjoy gardening, composting proves to be an efficient way to deliver nutrients that promote plant growth and can help restore life in depleted soil. The best part is, this process is free, easy and good for the environment! See below for a list of some materials that are rich in carbon or nitrogen and should be used when you compost:

How To Host a "Green" BBQ

One of the most popular weekend summer activities, whether it be a holiday weekend or not, is hosting a BBQ. In fact, summer BBQs are what some people look forward to most when the warm weather starts to kick in. Whether you're hosting a small BBQ that just includes close friends and family, or a large one that is meant to celebrate a special holiday or event, there are many things you must consider while you get ready. With help from the Nature Conservancy, we've collected a few tips you can use to go green as you plan your next summer BBQ:
  1. Plates and Silverware: Always use reusable or biodegradable plates and utensils when preparing for your BBQ. If you prefer to use biodegradable products, make sure that they are cleaned well before sending them to the recycling bin.
  2. Avoid Individual-Sized Beverages: Rather than fill a cooler with individual soda cans and water bottles, fill up your own pitchers with these refreshing drinks. However, if you find yourself serving cans, make sure you provide guests with an easy way to recycle them.
  3. Label Cups: If guests are using plastic cups, provide a marker so they can write their names on them. This will reduce the amount of times guests will need to take a new cup since they won't have any reason to mix theirs up with anothers.
  4. Organic Food: If your budget allows, serve organic hot dogs and hamburgers instead of standard store products.
