Three Ways To Teach Children About Recycling

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Boro Wide Recycling, Maspeth NY, Teaching Children Recycling
Like most habits, the sooner children are taught and encouraged to recycle, the easier it will be for them to follow through with it when they are older. However, being that recycling is probably not on the top of their to do list when they could be playing with their latest video game or spending time with their friends, you as the adult will need to make it as interesting and appealing to them as possible. See below for a few ways that you can start to introduce the three Rs to your little ones at home –

1. Reading: If reading a bedtime story to your child is part of your daily routine, take advantage of this time and choose a story that discusses the environment or describes the act of recycling taking place. Especially if you can find a book where your child’s favorite character is recycling, there is a good possibility they will start to mimic the actions on their own.

2. Decorating: Since you will need a recycling bin or two before you can even get into the specifics, we suggest making it a family affair and have your children decorate the bins you’ve put aside for paper, plastic, glass and more. Although they aren’t actually recycling yet, this is a great place to start when it comes to differentiating the materials they should keep an eye out for.

3. Practicing: Practice makes perfect, doesn’t it? Once your children are old enough to truly understand the act of recycling and why it is important, we highly recommend practicing it with them as often as possible. For example, take a few minutes each day or week to travel around your home and see how many unwanted items your children can identify as recyclable.

Ways To Reuse Your Keurig’s “K-Cups”

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

If you randomly asked ten individuals what their choice of morning drink is, what do you think they would say; water, orange juice, milk? While all of the above are popular breakfast drinks, it’s likely that the majority of surveyors would say that they can’t start their day without a cup of coffee – have you ever tried to get into a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts before 10 AM? But although some coffee drinkers prefer store bought brands, many others have jumped onto the DIY trend to avoid long lines and the hassle of needing to make a stop before school or work – which of these groups do you fit in?

If your Keurig is one of the most valuable appliances in your home, here are a few ways that you can reuse your K-Cups, courtesy of Good Housekeeping:

Plant Pot: Although it’s winter, your K-Cup can be the perfect house for indoor plants. Whether you grow them yourself or replant something you buy, K-Cups are the perfect size for windowsill décor.

Organizers: Do you have a desk at home with paper clips, staples and similar office supplies scattered throughout your drawers? Use your K-Cups to de-clutter and reorganize some of your greatest messes.

Ingredients: If you spend most of your time in the kitchen, K-Cups can be the perfect accessory to have by your side to differentiate between ingredients. From salt and pepper to cinnamon, garlic and more, your K-Cup can serve as a measuring tool to help ensure that your recipe is followed as described.

For additional tips on how to reuse K-Cups, please click here.

Though they are small, K-Cups can have a big impact on our environment. The next time you brew your own cup of coffee, be sure to keep in mind just how simple (and beneficial) it can be to reuse them as opposed to sending them to the trash.

Tips For Composting In Winter

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Boro Wide Recycling, Maspeth NY, Composting
Are you or other members of your family proponents of composting? Or, is it something you would like to get into but haven’t started yet? If you are a regular composter or are about to be one but think that the winter season is holding you back, we are here to tell you that your efforts do not need to be interrupted by freezing or below freezing temperatures. Rather, you may just need to make a slight adjustment to your composting techniques! For a few tips on how you can make the most of your composting efforts during the winter season, see below –

Add Warmth – By insulating your current compost bin or building a protective barrier around your compost pile, you can prevent the cold air from disrupting any internal processes. A few examples of products you can use to insulate are leaves and hay.

Watch Moisture – The amount of moisture present in your compost pile will heavily impact its ability to perform. In a season where snow and rain can be abundant at times, you will want to closely monitor your compost pile to ensure it hasn’t been drowned by winter weather conditions.

Provide Nitrogen – While a balance of carbon rich and nitrogen rich materials is necessary for your compost pile to be effective, during the winter season, you will need to pay extra attention to how much nitrogen based products are added. This is because these materials, which include but are not limited to leaves and branches, play a major role in the decomposition process when temperatures begin to drop.

Eco-Friendly Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Boro Wide Recycling, Maspeth NY, Valentine's Day Gift Ideas
With Valentine’s Day just days away, people of all ages are flooding jewelry stores, candy stores, flower shops, perfume/cologne stands and more to find the perfect gift for someone special. However, aside from the traditional Valentine’s Day chocolates and bears, there are so many eco friendly gifts that can be given to say “I love you” on one of the most romantic days of the year. The following is just a brief list of ideas that you can use for inspiration:
Make a Donation – If your partner has a favorite charity, make a donation in their name!
Plant a Tree – Planting a tree in honor of or with your loved one is one the greenest gifts you can give! Not to mention, it can serve as an excellent symbol of your relationship and how it is growing.
Home Cooked Meal – Rather than drive across town to get to your restaurant of choice, save gas (and reduce pollution) by preparing a home cooked meal instead!
In addition to these three green gifts, don’t forget that you can also make your Valentine’s Day card at home or via digital technologies. And should flowers and chocolate be the only things on your sweetie’s wish list, well, that’s okay; there are plenty of organic versions of those products too!

What Construction Materials Can I Recycle?

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Boro Wide Recycling, Construction Recycling
Whether you are a homeowner who is tackling a home improvement project on their own or part of a construction team that spends each day working on different job sites, it is important for you to be aware of how you can contribute to recycling efforts when it comes to disposing project waste. Although what you are getting rid of may be large in size, there are certain materials that always belong in the recycling bin since they can be repurposed and reused in the future. Not sure which ones? The following is a list of construction site materials that can and should be recycled -

Wood
Sheetrock/Drywall
Steel
Concrete
Asphalt

Now, although you may be thinking that these materials are bruised and battered by the time they wind up in the recycling bin - well, you're right. However, scrap or not, even the smallest piece of wood, drywall, steel, concrete or asphalt can be reused in the future to aid in a new construction project.

Did you know that here at Boro Wide Recycling, we also offer recycling and waste management services to construction and demolition customers? To help, we are available to come directly to your job site to pick up items such as wood, concrete, metals and dirt. For more information on the construction and demolition services that we offer, or, to put in a request for service, please visit us on our website or contact us at (718) 416-1656 today.

Four Simple Ways You Can Recycle At Home

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.
Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Boro Wide Recycling, Recycling, Go Green, New York City Recycling
Recycle this, don't recycle that - after a while of being told what you can and can't recycle, you might start to get too wrapped up in the process of it all and begin confusing which items belong where. However, recycling is truly a simple act that can be done almost effortlessly; especially at home! If you feel like haven't been on your recycling game recently, refresh your habits by following the tips listed below -

  1. Designate one recycling bin to collect all of your plastic bottles once they are empty. While it can be easy to drop your water bottles, for example, in the trash after breakfast, lunch or dinner, ensure that they end up in the recycling bin by making one accessible by everyone in your household.
  2. Although snow has been pretty much the only weather condition our area has seen lately, spring is not that far away. When you start to clean out your closet for the change in season, always donate clothes you are not looking to keep.
  3. Use the paperwork from junk mail you receive as scrap paper for future notes. Even if you would rather not open it, the exterior of the envelope can come in handy the next time you need to take down a phone number or put together your grocery list.
  4. Rather than stuff your plastic bags in the garbage can with everything else, set aside a cabinet where you store them so that they can be used again and again. For example, plastic bags can serve as great garbage bags for smaller trash cans in rooms like your bedroom or bathroom.
As you start to practice recycling around your house, we suggest getting the whole family involved so that you can make your home a greener place. How do you plan to take action in your home? Visit us on Facebook or tweet at us on Twitter to let us know!
