How To Save Energy In The Summer

With the weather warming up, we bet that many homeowners are starting to come up with ways that they plan to keep cool this summer. However, most likely, that means tuning up the trusted A/C to ensure that it's ready to roll when needed. But being the major appliance that it is, an air conditioner is often the culprit when it comes to high utility bills during the summer season - that's because it consumes so much energy and requires tons of electrical power to get moving!

Since our goal is to consistently educate our readers on ways that they can go green and help our planet, today we're offering a few tips on how to save the valuable resource of energy over the next few months:

1. On cool nights, open the windows to let in fresh air rather than keep your A/C running. Then, as soon as you wake up, work to keep the cool air in for the morning by shutting the windows before it escapes so that you don't need to turn on your cooling unit too early.
2. Set your thermostat as high as possible (while maintaining comfort, of course). This way, even if it's not totally frigid in your home, you can still keep cool while letting your air conditioner take a bit of a rest.
3. If you have ceiling fans in your home, use them to your advantage so that you can raise your thermostats' temperature - did you know that you can raise the setting by about 4 degrees when using a ceiling fan? Not to mention, ceiling fans can help cool your home on their own too!
4. Schedule an appointment with an air conditioning expert to ensure that your system is running as efficiently as it should. Routine maintenance is key to keep an A/C performing properly, and when there is a lack of it, your system could wind up drawing more energy to pump out the cool air.
5. Avoid using appliances like your oven on days where temperatures are high. Since appliances such as these give off heat of their own, they will naturally make your home warmer and therefore cause your air conditioner to have to work harder.

What: Listen to the New York Philharmonic perform their annual Memorial Day concert! The best part is, tickets are free! But be sure to act soon to ensure that your seat is saved.

'Tis the season of backyard barbecues! With Memorial Day approaching rather quickly, we wouldn't be surprised if you're gearing up to have friends and family over for a BBQ of your own during the much anticipated long weekend many of us have coming up. But before you get too into the planning process, we hope that you'll take the time to make smart decisions so that your get together is a green one. If, however, you aren't sure how to move forward with this approach, no need to worry - we've got you covered! Just follow the tips below:

1. Avoid plastic and paper goods and opt for reusable silverware and place settings instead. Though you may add a few minutes onto your cleanup time, steering clear of disposable products is a must when it comes to eco-friendly efforts.
2. Pour beverages into large pitchers that guests can serve themselves from rather than buy individual serving sized cans. And just to bounce off of tip number 1, have guests label their cups if disposable products are being used so that they don't wind up with more than one.
3. If you have the option or are planning to buy a new one before the big day, choose gas grills over charcoal. These appliances run much more efficiently and are considered to be cleaner since they release less pollutants into the air.
4. Make recycling bins accessible to all of your guests and set your disposal standards ahead of time. By making guests aware of your eco-friendly efforts and letting them know what is expected from them when it comes time to dispose of their party waste, you can work to reduce the chances that your garbage will be filled with recyclable items by the end of the night.
5. When purchasing food, seek out the organic and locally grown products. Although locally grown doesn't necessarily mean organic for those particular items, they likely possess more eco-friendly characteristics such as being free of pesticides.

As a bonus tip, we also absolutely encourage you to encourage your guests to carpool, walk or bike to your Memorial Day BBQ if possible. Even if you have a large amount of parking available on your street, the less cars that come to the party, the better!

How To Keep Animals Out Of Your Trash

Have you ever noticed that your garbage was scattered throughout the street the morning after you left it on the curb? Although the damage can be minimal, paying close attention to the way you handle your trash can lower your chances of winding up with a mess to clean up the following day. The next time you put your garbage out for pickup, keep the following in mind to keep the critters away:

1. Make sure your garbage is tightly sealed in a bag before you even put it in a bin. 
2. Don't force bags that can't fit into your bin. By filling it with more than it can handle, you won't be able to secure the lid.
3. Place a heavy item on top of your lid so that the can becomes too heavy to knock into, or, invest in a garbage can whose handles lock to keep the lid in place in the event that it is pushed over.
4. Clean your can thoroughly as often as possible to prevent animal enticing odors from spreading.

By closing and covering your garbage in more ways than one, and by eliminating odors around your trash, you can surely minimize the number of paws that end up in your path.

Why Is Styrofoam Bad For The Environment?

In case you haven't heard, as of July 1, New York City manufacturers and suppliers will be prohibited from using and/or selling styrofoam items and packaging. Why? After compiling some research, the City of New York Department of Sanitation found that styrofoam lacks recyclable qualities, making it harmful to the environment.

To follow up with the findings that recycling styrofoam poses a threat to our planet, we've expanded on the topic to determine why else styrofoam is a cause for concern among environmentalists:

1. When styrofoam is first produced, approximately 57 chemical by-products are emitted into the air. Therefore, the moment it is created, our air begins to be polluted.
2. Petroleum is required for styrofoam to be made. In addition to the fact that petroleum is a non-sustainable resource, meaning it is not replenished at the same rate in which it is used, it is also a source of pollution when it is first created.
3. By nature, styrofoam is not biodegradable and it floats. That means it can stay in landfills forever or wind up in our waters. Since recycling is not a feasible option for this material, that which is disposed consumes too much space in our landfills or becomes damaging to marine life.

Home repair is usually replacing old work. With the new work comes tons of leftover debris. Here are materials from leftover home repair that most don’t know can be recycled!

• Shingles - Asphalt shingles can be recycled to pave roads.
• Drywall - Many facilities will accept drywall, as long as they are free of foreign objects and lead based paint.
• Paint - Drop off extra paint to a local Household Hazardous Waste facility or donate it to a good-cause. Don’t through it away! It’s hazardous to the environment!
• Brick - Old brick can be ground to make concrete or resold as aged brick
• Carpet - Ask your new carpet dealer about some options for recycling.

NYC Officials Consider Banning Styrofoam

New York City officials are considering banning plastic foam containers from being sold in NYC as an effort to increase the city’s recycling rate.

Many NYC takeout locations use polystyrene or Styrofoam products to package up takeout for many customers. However, these containers can take years to break down when put in the trash.

Department of Sanitation Deputy Commissioner Ron Gonen said, “The environmental benefits of recycling are obvious. What we’re trying to do is make clear to everyone why it’s important from an economic perspective.”

First, let me say my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families at this time. I am grateful that my family has come through this unharmed. I wanted to reach out to all of you to say thank you for all your hard work during this time. I know that all of us have been affected by this disaster and I commend you for all that you are doing for not only our company but for our community as well. Many of you have seen things that I can’t imagine we would ever see in our lifetime. My heart goes out to all of our neighbors that have been affected by this hurricane. With this in mind, some of us in the office were wondering how we could in our small way help those affected by this disaster. I went onto the website,www.nyc.gov, to find out how we could help. I found a Hurricane Relief fund that we could donate, and 100% of the proceeds are dispersed to relief efforts and organizations. I have attached a page from the website that gives some details about this fund. I am going to leave a box in our office for anybody that may be interested in giving a donation. Of course, you can donate anonymously and any amount of donation is appreciated. I will be making the donation in care of the staff of Boro-Wide Recycling. Our bosses have kindly agreed to match all donations made. Thank you in advance for your donations.

 

Anyway, we have asked our employees to help donate to the hurricane relief and they are coming in with donations. Boro-Wide will also match the employee donations.  I would like to say something about what Boro-Wide is trying to do. Maybe you can write a short blurb about it.  I’m not looking for other people to donate, I just want them to know what we are doing. Tension Growing at Gas Stations After Sandy

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has left many people on the East Coast without homes, heat, food and gas. Tension and lines at gas stations have been high since last week when Hurricane Sandy left many stations in the East without power. 

Although FEMA has delivered fuel to stations in New York and New Jersey, tensions are still high and the gas crisis has only gotten worse. Not only do people need gas for their cars, many are in need of fuel for their generators. Many people are waiting on lines for hours in hopes to fill up their tanks. A motorist from Bay Ridge reported waiting on a 16 hour line!

FEMA brought 8 million gallons of gas with them over this past weekend and are sending another 28 million gallons. However, it will take a few days for the lines to die down. Governor Cuomo is urging motorists to keep their cars at home as much as possible!

A Look at the Barclays Center!

Barclays Center – the Brooklyn sports/entertainment complex, opened with an impressive pomp and show to celebrate the occasion. Bruce Ratner along with Mayor Bloomberg, Brooklyn Nets owner – Mikhail Prokhorov among others joined in for the fun and festivities.

Described by some locals as something monstrous out of a “Transformer” movie, the Barclay’s Center is an impressive steel structure with a 360 degree LED marquee screen.  It has an 18 K capacity and is touted as a mecca of culture where “troubles can be left behind” for a few hours of the day. The Barclays Center and the entertainment that it will offer will be readily accessible by the subway system.

Despite some concerns, Brooklyn residents are warming up to the idea of having Barclays Center in their midst. They are already seeing some positive changes with about 1500 jobs being created. Mayor Bloomberg and Brooklyn Borough President also presented the Barclays Center as a matter of pride that will bring boom time back to Brooklyn!
