Recycling is an act that can be performed in many different ways.  If you think that recycling is a modern phenomenon championed by environmentalists and concerned citizens, think again.  Evidence is being discovered that hundreds of thousands of years ago, our prehistoric ancestors learned to recycle the objects they used in daily life, according to researchers gathered at an international conference in Israel.

The three big "Rs" are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  Reducing can be accomplished by consciously purchasing an eco-friendly, and keeping it to refill instead of buying new bottles.  As for recycling, almost every community has some type of curbside recycling, or local place you can take your used plastics.  The creativity really comes in to play with the third R, reuse.  Statistics say only about 20 percent of plastic water bottles are actually recycled.  which leaves about 80 percent in landfills or the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is an island of garbage that stretches for hundreds of miles in the Pacific Ocean.

Why Water Recycling is so Important

Water not only makes up about 70 percent of the surface of our planet but also about 60 percent of our bodies.  It is safe to say that water is pretty important to us.  Recycling has usually referred to things like different types of metals and plastics, but water recycling has come a long way and is now being practiced all over the world from Melbourne, Australia to Anaheim California. 

Water Recycling uses high-tech membrane filters to turn municipal effluent into clean, safe drinking water.  The process starts by moving through filters that have tiny microscopic pores, then using ultraviolet light and common chemicals like chlorine to reclaim and reuse water.  The water is then put into a lake or an aquifer and later goes back into the municipal water system.  Water recycling can also occur with the use of man-made wetlands, by filtering water through hundreds of acres of native plants, which cleans the water through natural biological processes.

Aveda goes Full Circle

 Many cosmetic consumers purchase makeup and shampoo that has traditionally been wrapped in packaging that can not be recycled properly like the rest. Aveda is known for its organic and plant-derived ingredients and as of now its debut of Aveda's Full Circle program this month. All of Aveda's 107 Experience Center retail stores in the U.S will accept any Aveda packaging that isn't usually accepted by local recycling services; packaging like bottle caps, makeup brushes, tubes, pumps and certain bottles and jars.

What does this mean exactly?

Aveda will now recycle material that would otherwise be thrown away, material that ca be repeatedly recycled into their own packaging.
This is not the first time Aveda lent a hand with waste recycling. In 2008, they started a bottle cap recycling program which allowed anyone to bring in bottle caps from any store, not only cosmetic stores, into Aveda stores. The program was a great way to obtain raw material that can be repeatedly recycled without degradation. Aveda recycles the caps into new ones and sample tubes and also is one of the few programs that provides the means to recycle makeup brushes. Aveda, part of Estee Lauder Companies, plans to work with G2 Revolution, the companies recycler; together they plan to give recycled materials back to suppliers so they can be used in Aveda's new packaging. Most of Aveda's packaging contain 100% recycled material, a few even hold Cradle to Cradle certification.

 “ We thought that it was time now to make a greater focus on our own packaging,”  Dave Rappaport explained, vice president of earth and community care for Aveda.
 “ We try to turn things back into usable products,” said G2's CEO John Graham.

Mets Sweep Yanks in Subway Series!

In a first for the NY Mets, the Amazin’s dealt the Yankees their fifth straight loss with their final win of this four game Subway Series to gain their first sweep of the Yankees since interleague play began.

Dillon Gee had his best game of the year, only giving up one run via solo shot by Robinson Cano in the third inning. Gee had a career high, 12 strike outs in 7 and a third innings work.

No one really expected the fourth place Mets to sweep the first place Yankees, but they did. The Yankees dropped to second place in the AL East, while the Mets are still in fourth in the NL East. Hopefully for the Mets, they can continue to win with games up against the worst team in the league, the Miami Marlins.

Tension Growing at Gas Stations After Sandy

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has left many people on the East Coast without homes, heat, food and gas. Tension and lines at gas stations have been high since last week when Hurricane Sandy left many stations in the East without power. 

Although FEMA has delivered fuel to stations in New York and New Jersey, tensions are still high and the gas crisis has only gotten worse. Not only do people need gas for their cars, many are in need of fuel for their generators. Many people are waiting on lines for hours in hopes to fill up their tanks. A motorist from Bay Ridge reported waiting on a 16 hour line!

FEMA brought 8 million gallons of gas with them over this past weekend and are sending another 28 million gallons. However, it will take a few days for the lines to die down. Governor Cuomo is urging motorists to keep their cars at home as much as possible!

Include: 

• Newspapers, catalogs, magazines
• White and colored paper (lined, copier, computer, staples OK)
• Mail and envelopes
• Paper bags
• Wrapping paper
• Soft-cover books, telephone books
• Cardboard egg cartons and trays
• Smooth cardboard
• Corrugated cardboard boxes

Place all paper recyclables together in clear bags or in any bin labeled with green recycling decals! 

Do not include:

• Hardcover books
• Napkins, paper towels, or tissues
• Solid paper cups or plates
• Paper soiled with liquid or food

New Celebrity Partnership Creates Brand with Products Made From Recycled Waste!

Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas and Coca-Cola are partnering to make products from recycled waste. One of their items will be a pair of headphones or  “beats” that will run at about $349 per pair!

You may be thinking that $349 is quite a high price for a pair of headphones. However, products made out of recycled waste tend to be on the more expensive side because of the process required to incorporate these materials into what is being created. 

Will.i.am and Cola-Cola are hoping that consumers but price aside on this new hot item and hope that brands like “Beats” can help overcome the price!

The line of products (which include clothing and gear) from Will.i.am and partner Coca-Cola are called Ekocycle. Coca-Cola has reported that a portion of their profits will be donated to recycling and community improvement groups!

It’s finally here! The 2012 Olympic Games begin tomorrow night in London! The opening ceremony begins tomorrow night at 7:30 pm EST on NBC! The opening ceremony is an exciting and emotional time for all those who gather to celebrate the beginning of such a great event.

This year, the opening ceremony in London is being directed by British film director Danny Boyle. Boyle has been involved with productions such as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and 28 Days Later. Will the London 2012 opening ceremony be able to top the 2008 opening ceremony from Beijing?

Coca-Cola makes Recycling Pledge!

Coca-Cola is making a recycling pledge for the 2012 Olympics in London! The company is pledging to recycle all clear plastic bottles collected at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games into 80 million new Coke bottles!

The pledge made by Coca-Cola will require the company to recycle all colorless Coke and non-Coke PET plastic waste into new bottles within six weeks of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Broadway ticket prices are outrageously expensive, but you can listen to the biggest hits from current on-and-off-Broadway shows for free at Broadway in Bryant Park! Thursdays starting July 12, performers from shows like Spider Man, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, Wicked and Anything Goes will belt out musical numbers over your lunch hour.

The Lincoln Center Festival which will run July 5 through August 5, seeks to showcase the most innovative and unique of what we understand to be the classical performance arts. This year’s festival will feature performances from France, Scotland and China, as well as the great US of A, of course. Check out Alan Cummings in Macbeth, Cate Blanchett in Uncle Vanya, and Mykhail Baryshnikov in In Paris.

If you’re into movies, Wednesday night River Flicks is just the place for you! Classified as "For Grownups," the series kicks off July 11 with the comparably tame titles Moneyball and Super 8 then quickly jumps to the decidedly more adult Bridesmaids. All the films are show on the Pier 63 Lawn in Chelsea and although you are welcome to bring a picnic, River Flicks provides free popcorn during the movie!

Apple Products and the Environment.. Do They Go Hand in Hand?

It seems as if Apple, one of the nation’s leaders in technology, is expanding every year. Every couple of months, Apple releases new products that blow consumers away.

Earlier this week, Apple seemed to be mentioned a lot on various blogs on the internet after the company made the decision to no long be a part of a company called EPEAT which is an environmental certification program for electronics.

Apple has reported that it doesn’t mean that their future products won’t be constructed without keeping the environment and environmental standards in mind.

Kristen Huguet, spokeswomen for Apple reported to CNN stating, "Apple takes a comprehensive approach to measuring our environmental impact and all of our products meet the strictest energy efficiency standards backed by the U.S. government, Energy Star 5.2. We also lead the industry by reporting each product's greenhouse gas emissions on our website, and Apple products are superior in other important environmental areas not measured by EPEAT, such as removal of toxic materials."

Ways To Conserve Energy While On Summer Vacation!

Are you going on a vacation this summer? Will you be away from your home for a couple of days? Follow these simple steps to do your part in helping to go green! These few tips can help you conserve energy and save a few bucks while on the road!

Turn Down the Water Heater: For gas water heaters, turn the dial to the lowest setting but do not turn it all the way off. Your heater may even have a vacation or pilot mode- be sure to take advantage of that! For electric water heaters, flip the circuit breaker off before you leave.

Adjust Air Conditioning: If no one is going to be home, don’t leave your AC running. However, don’t turn it completely off. Set it at 85 degrees while you’re gone!

Put Lights On A Timer: If your lights are on a timer, you will cut down on cost and it will also appear to other that someone is home. If you’re using a timer, be careful when choosing light bulbs.

Refrigerator Reminders: Refrigerators take a tremendous amount of energy to run. So, depending on how long you’re going to be gone, you may want to consider cleaning out your refrigerator, unplugging it and disconnecting it from the water supply. If you’re only going to be a way a few days, turn the temperature up a couple of degrees since no one will be in and out of it all day.

Tips To Stay Safe This Independence Day!

Can you believe that one of the summers most popular holidays, July 4^th, is tomorrow!? Many individuals will go to the beach, attend fireworks, and relax with friends and family or fire up the barbeque!

No matter what you choose to do thisIndependence Day; The American Red Cross wants everyone to have a happy and safe Fourth of July! Therefore, they have issued a few simple steps that can insure you and your family stays safe this holiday!

Beach Safety: If you’re planning on attending the beach tomorrow, be sure to check the weather and water conditions before you leave and throughout the day. Also, only swim in designated areas and where lifeguards are present at ALL times. Also, watch the sun! You should limit the amount of time you spend in the direct sunlight between 10-4. Drink a lot of water and avoid caffeine and all alcoholic beverages while being in the sun. Make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and sunglasses!

Other tips:

-Actively supervise children at all times - even if a lifeguard is present. Stay within arm's reach of young children when they are in the water.

-Have weak swimmers wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Don't rely on water wings or inflatable toys.

-Always enter shallow water feet first. Dive only in areas marked safe for diving.

Rip Currents: Be aware of the danger of rip currents at all times!

Other tips:

-If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until out of the current. Once free, turn and swim toward shore.

-If someone can't swim to the shore, they should shout for help, float or tread water until free of the rip current and then head toward shore.

-Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures.

Fireworks Safety: With every 4^th of July celebration come fireworks! Here are some tips to follow to stay safe.

-Never give fireworks to small children and always follow the instructions on the packaging.

-Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.

-Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.

-Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."

-Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.

-Never throw or point fireworks toward people, animals,

Grilling Safety: If you’re planning on heating up the BBQ tomorrow, be sure to follow these tips!

-Always watch the barbecue grill when in use.

-Never grill indoors - not in a house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.

-Make sure children and pets stay away from the grill.

-Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.

-Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.

-Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

-Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when using grills.

Wind Turbines Incorporated To Utica Children's Museum!

A children’s museum in Utica, NY is hosting a wind turbine on their roof! The turbine is capable of producing up to 1,500 kilowatts of clean energy annually! The museum is using the turbine in efforts of a greener future!

The museum is also planning to incorporate another turbine in the near future. The turbine is going to cut down on the museums utility bill and any excess energy will return to the National Grid and reduce the bill even more! The museum is hoping to get children interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) at a young age. They’re also planning to have a PowerPoint presentation available to watch at the museum to further educate children on wind turbines.

New High-Tech Recycling Bins To Hit NYC!

New York City’s Ron Gonen is making efforts to double the city’s 1,000 recycling bins by 15 percent within the next five years. However, the Alliance of Downtown New York and the British clean-tech company J.M. Ornstein is making a contribution to the city’s efforts.

Shortly there will be a high-tech recycling bin installed in the Financial District at Whitehall Plaza on Whitehall and Water street The British company,

Media Metrica, Ltd., is shipping the $47,000 bomb proof recycling bin from England.

The same company is gearing up for the 2012 Summer Olympics and placing Renew Recycle Bins around London. Not only do these new recycling bins provide the public to practice “greener” actions but it also provides to be a communication “pod”. The bins will come equipped with dual, street facing LCD screens that show important information to those who are passing by. From weather, sports to the stock market, as well as provide “additional channels of communication for traffic, transit, weather and safety alerts.” says the Downtown Alliance.

It is also thought that these screens will provide helpful information for tourists and advertisements alike.

Many people here the phrase “go green” frequently but write it off as a costly expense. However, this is untrue. Going green is an opportunity that can create many new jobs and economies as well. It can also benefit the environment.

Our society is rapidly producing more and more waste, and it is no surprise that recycling is not a mainstream activity. 

Our environment is suffering in many areas. Our water resources are being depleted through consumption or pollution, global warming is drying lakes, oil is slipping into our seas and threatening marine ecology. Also, forests are being turned over to farmers to feed a growing population.

Environmental Degradation is a growing issue in our nation and our generation and future generations will certainly be effected by it. 

Incentives need to be developed to encourage our society to move towards a greener economy. People need to first truly understand and become aware of the health and psychological effects of an unclean environment.
