NYC May Force Residents to Compost Food Scraps

Recycling advocates gained a big supporter in New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, when he publicly urged residents of his city to start composting their food scraps.  This is a concept that the Twin Cities has been working on as well.  Right now only a few cities offer to pick up food scraps for composting, but there are pilot programs out there and interest is growing.  New York is launching a composting program that will expand later this year in an effort to make the city greener and reduce the waste.  The program was tested first, in 3,500 Staten Island homes and some Manhattan apartment buildings.  The test was quite successful leading those in-charge to expand the program to over 100,000 homes by this fall. 

As of now, the program is still voluntary but this may change in the next few years.  This implication is leaving many New Yorkers weary of the project, with the main concern being how expensive the fine for not composting would be.  New York is known for being one of the busiest cities in America. 

Almost everyone is always on the go, which is why composting may become a concern for these busy citizens.  It is all an effort to make our environment as healthy as it can be, so fines may be the only way to keep this program successful.  We will have to wait and see if the program becomes mandatory.

Dunkin' Donuts Updates Customers on How New NYC Regulations Change Their Menu!

A few months ago, Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a ban on the selling of large sugary drinks in NYC, which will go into effect in a few days.

However, the ban may be affecting your morning Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. The popular coffee company has begun posting signs around their NYC locations advising customers of what will be changing at their NYC Dunkin’ chains.

The company has announced from here on out:

You will have to add your own sugar to large & extra-large hot beverages and medium & large iced beverages.  

You will have to add your own flavor swirl to large & extra-large hot beverages and medium & large iced beverages.

There will also be a beverage size change on hot chocolate and dunkaccinos. They will only be available in small and medium size cups only. Frozen beverages will now only be available in RESIZED small & medium only.

Cornell NYC Tech Campus to Open in 2017!

Yesterday, Cornell University released the first pictures of their $2 billion tech campus that is proposed to be built on New York City’s Roosevelt Island.  

The campus, Cornell NYC Tech, hopes to one day put New York City up there as a “global destination for start-ups, entrepreneurs, and computer engineers.” The first phase of Cornell NYC Tech is scheduled to open in 2017 and the second phase is expected to be completed in 2037.

The five-story Eco friendly campus academic buildings are rumored to produce as much energy as it takes in.

NYC Places a Ban on Sale of Large Sugary Drinks!

New York City’s Board of Health has put a ban on the sale of large sugary drinks in restaurants and other venues around the city. Since this new ban has been placed, it has stirred up much controversy.

The ban is being placed on regular soda, sweetened teas and other sugary drinks. These types of drinks will be sold, however, not in a container larger than 16 ounces.

The Board of Health and NYC made this decision as an effort to help cut down on the obesity epidemic in our country. Mayor Bloomberg commented on the ban saying, “This is the biggest step a city has taken to curb obesity.”
