There are many misconceptions and myths about recycling.  We are going to set the record straight!

Myth: Labels must be removed from items before putting them into recycling container.
Fact: You do NOT have to remove the label from the item before recycling.  Labels are destroyed during the recycling process.

Myth: Lids and caps cannot be recycled.
Fact: Lids and caps are recyclable and can be let on the bottle when placed in the recycle bin.

Myth: You need to remove staples before recycling mail and paper.
Fact: You do not need to remove staples before recycling paper.  Also, the plastic window found in some envelopes can be recycled as well!

Myth: It is okay to flush medication down the toilet.
Fact:  Do NOT flush medication down the toilet! Contact your doctor to learn what you can do to get rid of expired or unused medication.

Myth: Latex paint is hazardous.
Fact: Latex paint is not hazardous and is in fact water-based.  When dry, it may be placed with your regular refuse. 

Myth: It is okay to put electronic devices in the trash.
Fact: It is illegal to throw certain electronic devices in the garbage.  These devices should be brought to your local electronics drop off location.

NYC Taking Sugary Drink Ban Further

Last month, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg but a ban on extra-large sugary drinks. The ban was being placed in effort to reduce obesity in our country. Now, New York City is taking it one step further.

Mayor Bloomberg would also like to ban sugary and fatty foods in hospitals. This ban in hospital cafeterias would eliminate deep fryers, make salad options mandatory and allow only healthy snacks to be consumed.

Levi's to Debut Eco-Friendly Line of Denim!

Levi’s clothing company is going to debut a new “ Eco” line of jeans! The new line of denim will be offered for both men and woman and will made from recycled plastic bottles and plastic food trays!

Each new jean in the collection contains 20% recycled content or eight, twelve to twenty ounce plastic bottles per pair! The new line is being called Waste<Less. James Curleigh, the company’s global president, reports the new line is aiming to add “value to waste”.

Cornell NYC Tech Campus to Open in 2017!

Yesterday, Cornell University released the first pictures of their $2 billion tech campus that is proposed to be built on New York City’s Roosevelt Island.  

The campus, Cornell NYC Tech, hopes to one day put New York City up there as a “global destination for start-ups, entrepreneurs, and computer engineers.” The first phase of Cornell NYC Tech is scheduled to open in 2017 and the second phase is expected to be completed in 2037.

The five-story Eco friendly campus academic buildings are rumored to produce as much energy as it takes in.

Going Green Will Help the MTA but Cost You!

The MTA has decided that in order to go green and stop printing millions of MetroCards, they are now considering charging a $1 for each new MetroCard you purchase. They are calling this a “green fee” and believe it will encourage riders to hold onto their existing cards and refill that as the amount decreases.

The goal of this action is to reduce the amount of MetroCards that are printed. By doing this action it will decrease all the metro cards that are always on the ground in the subways and city, but is now costing the commuters more money. The MTA believes that by putting a cost of replacing your MetroCards is a good act for the environment and will reduce the liter in the stations.

A newly purchased MetroCard usually doesn’t expire for about 12 months, and until that expiration date the MetroCard can be repeatedly refilled without worrying to pay a $1 every time you buy a new card.  A surcharge will not be imposed when a rider with an expired MetroCard is buying a new one.

Many citizens are having a hard time agreeing with this proposed idea but in the end this can be beneficial for all involved. By enforcing that every time you lose your card or throw it out, you have to purchase a new one it will make the commuters more aware of where they place their MetroCard and how they handle it.  If you are a daily commuter this will help you if you are smart about using your card, and if you are not so frequent MTA rider this policy will not affect you as much as it does to others.

NYC Places a Ban on Sale of Large Sugary Drinks!

New York City’s Board of Health has put a ban on the sale of large sugary drinks in restaurants and other venues around the city. Since this new ban has been placed, it has stirred up much controversy.

The ban is being placed on regular soda, sweetened teas and other sugary drinks. These types of drinks will be sold, however, not in a container larger than 16 ounces.

The Board of Health and NYC made this decision as an effort to help cut down on the obesity epidemic in our country. Mayor Bloomberg commented on the ban saying, “This is the biggest step a city has taken to curb obesity.”

A Look Into a Futuristic Shower!

Take a look into the future! This futuristic shower will save you thousands of gallons of water! Although it is still in the testing phase, it should be available for sale in 2013. 

The company who designed the shower, CINTEP, had not put a price tag on this shower yet, however, makers believe the shower will pay for itself in 3 to 4 years at current utility prices!
