Are you going on a vacation this summer? Will you be away from your home for a couple of days? Follow these simple steps to do your part in helping to go green! These few tips can help you conserve energy and save a few bucks while on the road!

Turn Down the Water Heater: For gas water heaters, turn the dial to the lowest setting but do not turn it all the way off. Your heater may even have a vacation or pilot mode- be sure to take advantage of that! For electric water heaters, flip the circuit breaker off before you leave.

Adjust Air Conditioning: If no one is going to be home, don’t leave your AC running. However, don’t turn it completely off. Set it at 85 degrees while you’re gone!

Put Lights On A Timer: If your lights are on a timer, you will cut down on cost and it will also appear to other that someone is home. If you’re using a timer, be careful when choosing light bulbs.

Refrigerator Reminders: Refrigerators take a tremendous amount of energy to run. So, depending on how long you’re going to be gone, you may want to consider cleaning out your refrigerator, unplugging it and disconnecting it from the water supply. If you’re only going to be a way a few days, turn the temperature up a couple of degrees since no one will be in and out of it all day.

Wind Turbines Incorporated To Utica Children's Museum!

A children’s museum in Utica, NY is hosting a wind turbine on their roof! The turbine is capable of producing up to 1,500 kilowatts of clean energy annually! The museum is using the turbine in efforts of a greener future!

The museum is also planning to incorporate another turbine in the near future. The turbine is going to cut down on the museums utility bill and any excess energy will return to the National Grid and reduce the bill even more! The museum is hoping to get children interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) at a young age. They’re also planning to have a PowerPoint presentation available to watch at the museum to further educate children on wind turbines.

Are Traffic Lights Going Green?

There is a new shining star in Lincoln Nebraska and researchers are saying it’s the first of its kind! The traffic light at the corner of Highway 2 looks like any other until you begin hearing a wind turbine whirring and see a solar panel soaking up the sun!

Traffic signals are being run by a renewable power source, so no more power is needed from the power grid and therefore reduces the traffic operation cost. Lincoln spends $72,000 each year on supplying power to traffic lights. By implementing this “green” stoplight unit, this cost can now be cut down!

Many people here the phrase “go green” frequently but write it off as a costly expense. However, this is untrue. Going green is an opportunity that can create many new jobs and economies as well. It can also benefit the environment.

Our society is rapidly producing more and more waste, and it is no surprise that recycling is not a mainstream activity. 

Our environment is suffering in many areas. Our water resources are being depleted through consumption or pollution, global warming is drying lakes, oil is slipping into our seas and threatening marine ecology. Also, forests are being turned over to farmers to feed a growing population.

Environmental Degradation is a growing issue in our nation and our generation and future generations will certainly be effected by it. 

Incentives need to be developed to encourage our society to move towards a greener economy. People need to first truly understand and become aware of the health and psychological effects of an unclean environment.
