Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert to be Held This Week at MSG!

This Wednesday, December 12^th, many huge names in the music industry are coming out to support Hurricane Sandy victims.

The 12-12-12 concert will broadcasting live from New York City’s Madison Square Garden at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to the Robin Hood Relief Fund which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that serve families and individuals in the regions which were affected the most by the storm.

Some of performers for this Wednesday’s show include Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, The Who, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & the E. Street Band and Chris Martin.

NYC Offering Online Courses to Students Displaced by Hurricane Sandy

Yesterday, City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced a new learning initiative for those students who were displaced from their homes and schools after Hurricane Sandy.

New York City will now be offering online courses to students. The courses are being offered to students in grades 6 through 12. Students who were reassigned to other schools while their school is under repair are also eligible for the online courses.

The courses will be available in core subjects such as math, English and history. If students do not have computers are home, libraries throughout New York City, Queens and Brooklyn will be providing internet access for their use.

Tension Growing at Gas Stations After Sandy

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has left many people on the East Coast without homes, heat, food and gas. Tension and lines at gas stations have been high since last week when Hurricane Sandy left many stations in the East without power. 

Although FEMA has delivered fuel to stations in New York and New Jersey, tensions are still high and the gas crisis has only gotten worse. Not only do people need gas for their cars, many are in need of fuel for their generators. Many people are waiting on lines for hours in hopes to fill up their tanks. A motorist from Bay Ridge reported waiting on a 16 hour line!

FEMA brought 8 million gallons of gas with them over this past weekend and are sending another 28 million gallons. However, it will take a few days for the lines to die down. Governor Cuomo is urging motorists to keep their cars at home as much as possible!

Mayor Bloomberg Will Not Call Off NYC Marathon

Many people are speaking out about whether or not the New York City Marathon should be run this coming weekend. Mayor Michael Bloomberg canceled the home opener for the Nets-Knicks at the Barclays Center last night but says the marathon must be run.

Many runners who had planned on running the marathon either cannot get here to run it or simply are refusing to because they don’t agree with the Mayors decision. Many also believe the conditions aren't safe or sanitary.

Breezy Point Devastated from Hurricane Sandy

During Hurricane Sandy, at least 80 homes were destroyed in the New York City borough of Queens in a six-alarm fire that raged overnight and into the daylight as floodwater continued to surge.

By 11 a.m. yesterday morning, the New York City Fire Department contained the huge blaze in Breezy Point Queens, 12 full hours after it began. The fire took place in a “Zone A” area which New York City Office of Emergency Management reported was the highest risk of flooding from Hurricane Sandy.

Firefighters reported the wind is what made it so hard to put the flames out. There were about 200 firefighters on the scene.
