Are you or other members of your family proponents of composting? Or, is it something you would like to get into but haven’t started yet? If you are a regular composter or are about to be one but think that the winter season is holding you back, we are here to tell you that your efforts do not need to be interrupted by freezing or below freezing temperatures. Rather, you may just need to make a slight adjustment to your composting techniques! For a few tips on how you can make the most of your composting efforts during the winter season, see below –

Add Warmth – By insulating your current compost bin or building a protective barrier around your compost pile, you can prevent the cold air from disrupting any internal processes. A few examples of products you can use to insulate are leaves and hay.

Watch Moisture – The amount of moisture present in your compost pile will heavily impact its ability to perform. In a season where snow and rain can be abundant at times, you will want to closely monitor your compost pile to ensure it hasn’t been drowned by winter weather conditions.

Provide Nitrogen – While a balance of carbon rich and nitrogen rich materials is necessary for your compost pile to be effective, during the winter season, you will need to pay extra attention to how much nitrogen based products are added. This is because these materials, which include but are not limited to leaves and branches, play a major role in the decomposition process when temperatures begin to drop.

New Dining Policy Reduces Food Waste

Thanksgiving is gone, but the leftovers aren't! Most of us have been slowly making our way through the containers of stuffing and potatoes for the past few days but there is only so much turkey one person can handle.  Thus, our once delicious leftovers make their inevitable trip to the trash.  As a result, food waste piles up. 

Food waste is a major problem in the United States.  Many times, we bite off more than we can chew, other times it seems that the portions we are served are oversized.  The Los Angeles Times stated that almost 40 percent of the nation's food supply is thrown away. 

Some restaurant owners have developed their own solution to the problem by charging diners a fee for uneaten food.  For "all-you-can-eat" style restaurants this seems like a reasonable request.  Isn't a buffet only worth the money if you are going to eat as much as you want without waste?

While this solution has gotten negative feedback from some patrons, it is rather commendable that restaurant owners are going to such great lengths to eliminate food waste.  Other solutions include recovering good food from the trash and recycling leftovers for composting and energy generating.
