 The plastic used to manufacture various beverage bottles and food containers, Recycling PET, has helped generate almost 26,000 indirect jobs. Also, the plastics recycling industry can reduce poverty across SA and contribute to GDP growth.

Chandru Wadhwani, Extrupet’s Chief Operating Officer reported “No longer is it sufficient for packaging to just be ‘recyclable’‚ it must be able to demonstrate that it is in fact being recycled. Designing packaging with recycling in mind from the offset is critical in determining its final recyclability as recyclers are ever cautious about which ‘packs’ they will accept‚ and which they will not.”

Companies "Going Green" And Making A Difference!

A couple of years ago the environmental movement of the century began and rapidly began to gain prominence. As the movement took off, many different companies decided to hop and board and “go green” in many ways around the office.

Some companies contributed to the movement by beginning recycling programs to reduce waste and others installed energy saving appliances and re-designed their offices to include more environmentally friendly products. Some offices decided they’d contribute by taking better advantage of natural lighting.

You may be thinking do these changes actually make a difference? And the answer is, yes. The U.S. Green Building Council reported that on average, buildings that decided to “go green” experience 30-50 percent reduced energy use, 35 percent reduced carbon emissions, 40 percent reduced water use, and 70 percent reduced solid waste!!! It has also been reported that “green” buildings make employees feel physically better and boost employee morale!

Heads Up for New York State about your Rechargeable Batteries

For those of you living in New York it is now illegal to throw away rechargeable batteries in the garbage.

In December of 2010, there was a law signed by the governor called the NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act, which states that we now have to take unused and worn-out rechargeable batteries to be recycled.

Now stores that sell them and the manufacturers have to accept rechargeable batteries for recycling according to Bloomberg Business Week, so that the toxic chemicals are kept out of landfills.

Most rechargeable batteries contain toxic metals that can be released into the environment when improperly disposed. These rechargeable batteries include those for laptops, cameras, cell phones and rechargeable alkaline batteries.

Those who are caught throwing away rechargeable batteries face fines of $50 for the first offense and $100 for the second.
