It's winter break and while the kids are bouncing off the wall with excitement, parents can feel a little overwhelmed and desperate for activities to keep them busy. The following activities are fun ways to keep your children occupied while strengthening family bonds. Furthermore, these engaging crafts have eco-friendly benefits. Check out the following:

• Create a board game and pieces using old cereal boxes or shoe boxes. Use cereal bites as the pieces and eat them when you're finished!
• Create puzzles using old boxes. Draw on the blank side of the box, then cut out the pieces.
• Gather old holiday decorations that would otherwise be going in the trash and let your kids decorate their rooms.  This allows them to channel their inner creativity and is a great way to use that old wrapping paper, lights, or tissue paper!
• Start a band! Fill old soda bottles with rocks and pebbles, turn pizza boxes into banjos and tin cans into drums. It will keep the kids busy and even give you parents a nice break. Ask them to put on a show for you while you enjoy some down time on the couch.

Recycling has become a major factor in the well-being of our lives and more and more people are getting involved and supporting the cause. NYC is an example of a city that is taking initiative through the banning of styrofoam. The city council voted and banned styrofoam take-out containers. City-goers were using 23,000 tons of foam each year. This foam breaks down into tiny pieces and can find its way into the ocean, which has toxic results. McDonald’s is just one of the fast food places that are participating in the Styrofoam ban. The city’s objective is to get 75% of waste out by 2030.  So, what can we do to help the environment? There are a variety of ways you can reduce waste and recycle. Here is a list of things you can do with recycled goods:

§  Recycling newspapers can save one tree.

§  You can reuse newspapers by using it to wrap gifts.

§  Recycling cans could be made into furniture, airplanes and more.

§  Plastic bottles can be made into rugs, jackets and fences.

§  Aluminum foil can be made into a hat.

§  Recycling glass bottles could turn into roads, tiles and surfboards.

§  Rubber shoes when recycled can make basketball courts and soccer fields.

§  Buy reusable utensils and dishes.

§  Recycle all types of paper.

10 Backyard Items to Reuse this Summer!

Part of keeping our environment healthy and green, includes recycling as well as reusing things that we have purchased.  Although backyards may not accumulate as much junk as a garage, many people do acquire plenty of reusable items for the yard like furniture, gardening supplies and other materials.  After withstanding Mother Nature for a few years, you may decide that you need to replace these items.  Once you no longer need these items or decide it is time for a change, what can you do with these items?  You should always reuse or recycle.  Here are a few ways to reuse or recycle ten common backyard items. 

Garden Hoses: If you wish to recycle most communities have drop off recycling programs.  For those who would rather reuse many clever options exist like poking holes to turn it into a sprinkler or cut it to make a handle for something heavy.

Patio Furniture: Donations are usually the best option for recycling even if its not in great condition.  Depending on what the materials are made of you could bring it to a scrap yard and cash it in.

Grills: If your grill still works they are easy to sell.  Grills can also be taken to the scrap yard for a profit.

Yard Waste: If you are someone who composts food scraps, dealing with things like grass clippings, branches and leaves is easy.  Just add them to your compost and it provides carbon.  If you are not a composter most municipalities provide special curbside pick up for your yard waste.

Fencing: For Fencing you may need to seek a specific recycling solution.  For example metal fencing you can scrap, and plastic fences can be taken to a center that accepts large amounts of plastic and wood can be taken to local woodworking organizations.

Potting Soil: Potting soil can be donated to local gardens or neighbors starting gardens.

Sand: You can add sand to compost as well, it also helps with drainage  if added to the bottom of pots and used to fill holes in your yard.

Insect Repellent: If you use citronella candles in your back yard the candle may seem useless after the wick has burnt out.  You can melt the left over wax onto a new wick and reuse it. 

Scrap Wood: Scrap wood can be reused even if it is treated for painted.  It can be stripped and used for other projects or firewood.

London Power Station to Be Fueled By Cooking Oil & Grease!

It’s true! Thames Water, Great Britain’s biggest water company has teamed up with 20C, a utility company to run the largest fat-fueled power station in the world!

Used cooking oil and grease from London homes, restaurants and food manufacturers will be collected and used to power the facility which will produce an estimated 130 Gigawatt hours a year of electricity. That’s enough to power nearly 40 thousand, average sized homes!

The use of the oil and grease is expected to ease sewer blockages, which occur when fat, grease and oil are poured down sink drains.
