How To Go Green In Your Backyard

Boro-Wide Recycling Corp.

Now that we have covered how to go green in your kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and basement, we are up to the last post in our green your home series - the backyard! Although it isn't necessarily inside of your home it is still a part of it, and therefore, it can be equally contributed to as a part of your go green efforts! And although you might be thinking "I have plants in my yard, it's already green," the truth is that there's still a long way to go!

To make your yard as eco-friendly as the rest of the rooms in your home, consider the following:
Ways to go green in your backyard, Boro Wide Recycling
  1. Create your very own composting site to handle all of your food scraps. Not only will this benefit your yard's immediate environment, but it will also help reduce the waste in landfills and even save you some money as you won't need to purchase store bought products to enrich your soil.
  2. Pay attention to how often you water and make sure that you're not leaving your sprinkler on for longer than needed. To use this resource wisely, make an effort to water in the morning - this can help you avoid evaporation, which is more likely to happen later in the day.
  3. If you'll be using a fire pit this summer, seek out eco-friendly versions that do not emit pollution into our air - Forbes recommends natural gas or bioethanol ones!
  4. Avoid using chemicals like pesticides and weed killers on your lawn. If you need products to help you maintain your yard use a natural approach like compost - that brings us back to tip number 1!
  5. When growing your garden, use plants that are native to your environment. Why? If you're trying to nurture plants that aren't familiar with the growing conditions they are being placed in, you will likely have to use more water to keep them thriving.
That just about wraps up our green your home series! Between the past few posts, you now have a list of 25 tips that you can use to make your home one of the greenest on the block! We'd love to hear how these tips work for you, so be sure to visit us on Facebook and Twitter to share your experiences with us.

How To Have A Green St. Patrick's Day

Tips for going green on St. Patrick's Day

Whether you are Irish or not, St. Patrick's Day is a day where almost everyone and everything can be found in green. From the clothes we wear to the foods we eat and the decorations we hang (and even possibly the budding of the leaves on our trees), shades of green are evident everywhere you turn on this day each year. And if you aren't already "greened" out just by thinking about it, did you know that this day can get even greener? Below are a few ways that you can continue to go green - and by green we mean eco-friendly - for St. Patrick's Day this year:
  1. Recycle Beverage Cans: It's no surprise that St. Patrick's Day celebrations are often accompanied by an array of different drinks, but that just means there is that much more to recycle! Whether you're having a party at home or celebrating out with friends, be sure to properly dispose of any beverage cans when you're done.
  2. Avoid Litter: If you plan to attend the St. Patrick's Day parade in NYC this year, make it a priority to seek out waste bins near where you plan to watch from. Although there might not be one in close proximity to you, the extra steps and effort are worth it.
  3. DIY: When it comes to your decorations and your outfit for the day, see how much you can do yourself before heading out to buy. By being creative, you can save money and the planet too!
Here at Boro Wide Recycling, we wish you all a very safe and happy St. Patrick's Day and encourage you to take the above tips with you wherever you go to celebrate. And if you have another way that you plan to amp up your 'green' factor this year, be sure to visit us on Facebook and Twitter to share it with us!

Eco-Friendly Spring Cleaning Tips

As we welcome the spring season, many of us are getting ready to perform our annual spring cleaning routines. Whether you're looking to reduce clutter in your home or are simply looking to wash away the winter blues, any amount of spring cleaning is a great way to freshen up your home and put you in a feel-good mood. However, before you pick up any cleaning materials to get started, find out how you can help protect and clean the environment while also cleaning your home:

Clean Naturally
Instead of cleaning counters and floors with chemicals that reduce air quality and harm the environment, consider mixing a few household items to use instead. To make your own cleaning materials, mix baking soda, lemon, vinegar, salt, liquid soap and hot water; it's sure to do the trick!

Clean With Reusable Wipes and Scrubbers
Your spring cleaning efforts don't need to end with a trash can full of paper towels. To clean off any surfaces, try using reusable scrub brushes or homemade cloth cleaning rags that you can wash and reuse at any time.

Use Natural Air Fresheners
Though synthetic air fresheners smell great, they could be contaminating your home with phthalates or formaldehyde. Before turning to air fresheners for a fresh, clean smell, try opening the windows or place houseplants around your home.

Let It "Hang Out"
Since the weather is getting warmer, rather than toss your wet clothes into the dryer try hanging them outside. If weather doesn't permit this option, consider an inexpensive drying rack that you can set up inside your home; both are equally as effective!

Revamp Your Green Routine
After you've cleaned out your closets and dusted off your shelves, commit to staying green throughout the year. Take some time during your spring cleaning to reorganize your recycling bins, and get a head start by properly recycling the things you plan to get rid of.
