Wind Turbines Incorporated To Utica Children's Museum!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

A children’s museum in Utica, NY is hosting a wind turbine on their roof! The turbine is capable of producing up to 1,500 kilowatts of clean energy annually! The museum is using the turbine in efforts of a greener future!

The museum is also planning to incorporate another turbine in the near future. The turbine is going to cut down on the museums utility bill and any excess energy will return to the National Grid and reduce the bill even more! The museum is hoping to get children interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) at a young age. They’re also planning to have a PowerPoint presentation available to watch at the museum to further educate children on wind turbines.

What do you think about this addition to the museum? Let us know on our Facebook page linked HERE

New York City’s Ron Gonen is making efforts to double the city’s 1,000 recycling bins by 15 percent within the next five years. However, the Alliance of Downtown New York and the British clean-tech company J.M. Ornstein is making a contribution to the city’s efforts.

Media Metrica, Ltd., is shipping the $47,000 bomb proof recycling bin from England.
The same company is gearing up for the 2012 Summer Olympics and placing Renew Recycle Bins around London. Not only do these new recycling bins provide the public to practice “greener” actions but it also provides to be a communication “pod”. The bins will come equipped with dual, street facing LCD screens that show important information to those who are passing by. From weather, sports to the stock market, as well as provide “additional channels of communication for traffic, transit, weather and safety alerts.” says the Downtown Alliance.

Companies "Going Green" And Making A Difference!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

A couple of years ago the environmental movement of the century began and rapidly began to gain prominence. As the movement took off, many different companies decided to hop and board and “go green” in many ways around the office.

Some companies contributed to the movement by beginning recycling programs to reduce waste and others installed energy saving appliances and re-designed their offices to include more environmentally friendly products. Some offices decided they’d contribute by taking better advantage of natural lighting.

You may be thinking do these changes actually make a difference? And the answer is, yes. The U.S. Green Building Council reported that on average, buildings that decided to “go green” experience 30-50 percent reduced energy use, 35 percent reduced carbon emissions, 40 percent reduced water use, and 70 percent reduced solid waste!!! It has also been reported that “green” buildings make employees feel physically better and boost employee morale!

Will you make your company a “green” one? What changes can you incorporate?  Have you made any changes yet? Let us know on our Facebook page linked HERE

Happy Birthday, Garfield!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

As Garfield celebrates his 34th birthday today, his creator explains how he would like to see the smart-alecky cartoon live on.
Jim Davis originally created the Garfield cartoon on June 19, 1978, to “make people laugh, to feel better”. He explains to the Daily News that he would have no problem seeing someone carry on the legacy.
“I thought if I could do it right, I could do it for 25 years — which would have been nine years ago,” he said to the Daily News.

Davis and company plan to celebrate the lasagna loving cat in true Garfield style, stuffing their face with hamburgers and hotdogs.
Contrary to the success it has endured, Garfield was not set to be the original title of the strip, it was set out to be the cartoon’s owner Jonathan Arbuckle’s with the title “Jon”.
“But every time I wrote a gag, the cat took the punchline,” Davis said. “The cat was a wise guy and, I swear, from the first day took over the strip. So, I gave in and changed the name of the strip to ‘Garfield’ and played with it.” (The Daily News)
In 1978,, the comic strip initially ran in 41 newspaper, but three months after it launched, one of Garfield’s biggest clients, the Chicago Sun-Times, dropped it. However, the cat lovers and readers bombarded the paper with angry calls and letters until Garfield was brought back for the fans.
Abrupt and big hearted, Davis’ grandfather, the original origin of Garfield’s name has been a household name for 34 years running in 2,400 newspapers worldwide.

Are Traffic Lights Going Green?

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

There is a new shining star in Lincoln Nebraska and researchers are saying it’s the first of its kind! The traffic light at the corner of Highway 2 looks like any other until you begin hearing a wind turbine whirring and see a solar panel soaking up the sun!
Traffic signals are being run by a renewable power source, so no more power is needed from the power grid and therefore reduces the traffic operation cost. Lincoln spends $72,000 each year on supplying power to traffic lights. By implementing this “green” stoplight unit, this cost can now be cut down!

What do you think about “going green?” Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page linked HERE

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Are you unsure about what gets recycled with sanitation and what doesn’t? Here are some guidelines about what gets recycled with sanitation which apply to all New York City residences, schools, institutions, and agencies served by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY)!

Paper & Cardboard
  •  newspapers, magazines, catalogs
  • white and colored paper (lined, copier, computer, staples OK)
  • mail and envelopes (any color, window envelopes OK)
  • paper bags
  • wrapping paper
  • soft-cover books, telephone books (paperbacks, comics, etc.; no spiral bindings)
  • cardboard egg cartons and trays
  • smooth cardboard (food and shoes boxes, tubes, file folders, cardboard from product packaging)
  • corrugated cardboard boxes (flattened and tied)
Beverage Cartons, Bottles, Cans, Metal & Foil
Be sure to empty and rinse containers before recycling. Place all together in clear bags, or in any bin labeled with BLUE recycling decals or marked “Bottles & Cans”.  Also, remove caps and lids. Place metal caps and lids in the recycling bin; put plastic caps and lids in the garbage.

For Bulk items:
  • Furniture and appliances that are predominantly metal and are too big for your recycling container or clear bag (such as washing machines, metal filing cabinets, box springs, or water heaters) should be placed beside the recycling container on your regular Recycling Day
  • Before discarding appliances containing CFC gas or freon (such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, or dehumidifiers), you must schedule an appointment to place the item at the curb for CFC recovery. You can make an appointment on the Sanitation website or call 311. For safety reasons, the law requires doors to be removed from refrigerators and freezers before placing at the curb.

Our Society and Going Green

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Many people here the phrase “go green” frequently but write it off as a costly expense. However, this is untrue. Going green is an opportunity that can create many new jobs and economies as well. It can also benefit the environment.

Our society is rapidly producing more and more waste, and it is no surprise that recycling is not a mainstream activity.

Our environment is suffering in many areas. Our water resources are being depleted through consumption or pollution, global warming is drying lakes, oil is slipping into our seas and threatening marine ecology. Also, forests are being turned over to farmers to feed a growing population.

Environmental Degradation is a growing issue in our nation and our generation and future generations will certainly be effected by it.

Incentives need to be developed to encourage our society to move towards a greener economy. People need to first truly understand and become aware of the health and psychological effects of an unclean environment.

The Green Building Market is Growing

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

A report recently released by McGraw-Hill Construction, which is part of the McGraw-Hill Companies, estimated that the green homes share of the construction market was 17% in 2011, which equates to $17 billion, and is expected to rise 29-38% by 2016.

This expected rise in the percentage of green homes could potentially spell out an $87-$114 billion opportunity. This is based off of a five-year forecast for residential construction. The report reveals that two of the key factors driving this market growth are the fact that green homes are seen as having higher quality and that they save consumers money (http://goo.gl/WoXTR).

“In the current residential market, there is an enormous need to differentiate your homes for consumers,” says Harvey Bernstein, Vice President of Industry Insights and Alliances at McGraw-Hill Construction. “When builders are able to offer homes that not only are green, but also offer the combination of higher quality and better value, they have a major competitive edge over those building traditional homes.”

Some of the factors that are driving the growth of green home building are that it’s a higher quality for both new home builders and remodelers, customers are strongly value-driven and higher first costs for building green are noted by a much lower percentage of builders as an obstacle now than they were reported four years ago.
