Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

During Hurricane Sandy, at least 80 homes were destroyed in the New York City borough of Queens in a six-alarm fire that raged overnight and into the daylight as floodwater continued to surge.

By 11 a.m. yesterday morning, the New York City Fire Department contained the huge blaze in Breezy Point Queens, 12 full hours after it began. The fire took place in a “Zone A” area which New York City Office of Emergency Management reported was the highest risk of flooding from Hurricane Sandy.

Firefighters reported the wind is what made it so hard to put the flames out. There were about 200 firefighters on the scene.

Mayor Bloomberg would also like to ban sugary and fatty foods in hospitals. This ban in hospital cafeterias would eliminate deep fryers, make salad options mandatory and allow only healthy snacks to be consumed.

A Look at the Barclays Center!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Barclays Center – the Brooklyn sports/entertainment complex, opened with an impressive pomp and show to celebrate the occasion. Bruce Ratner along with Mayor Bloomberg, Brooklyn Nets owner – Mikhail Prokhorov among others joined in for the fun and festivities.

Described by some locals as something monstrous out of a “Transformer” movie, the Barclay’s Center is an impressive steel structure with a 360 degree LED marquee screen.  It has an 18 K capacity and is touted as a mecca of culture where “troubles can be left behind” for a few hours of the day. The Barclays Center and the entertainment that it will offer will be readily accessible by the subway system.

Despite some concerns, Brooklyn residents are warming up to the idea of having Barclays Center in their midst. They are already seeing some positive changes with about 1500 jobs being created. Mayor Bloomberg and Brooklyn Borough President also presented the Barclays Center as a matter of pride that will bring boom time back to Brooklyn!

New Recycling Bins Take the Guessing out of Recycling!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

A Hong Kong based design firm has released a new line of garbage receptacles that will take out the guess work when recycling. These recycle bins have lids with a clever sculpture – one each of a tin can, glass bottle and a milk carton. A clever way to symbolize what goes into each bin and a fun way to incorporate the value of recycling in children!

These recycling bins mad by Goodss Passion are called GO Recycling Bins made of polypropylene with a push-pedal controlled lid and of course the sculptural symbols. If you don’t already recycle, this might just make recycling a little less ordinary.
