New York Kids Get a Lesson on Recycling!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

New York is always an innovator and always looking for the newest way to do things.  Sims Municipal Recycling, a New York City contractor that handles curbside pickup o metal, glass and plastic recyclables in the city, which has developed the Recylarium, funded by the Sanitation Department.  The Recylarium is a trailer that has been transformed into a mobile education center for children.  It will travel from school to school education children about the importance of conserving our resources, to preserve our future.

Although the main focus of the Recylarium is to teach children, it is also functions as a research center to find out what kids respond to and apply it to advertising and educational games that they enjoy in the comfort of their own homes.  It contains exhibits that educate the student about what each recyclable is composed of and how those components can be reused, also which items can be recycled curb-side and what has to be taken to a designated location.  The Recylarium intersects nicely with Sims new recycling facility, currently under development at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, as the facility will include classroom space where New York schoolchildren will also gain first-hand experience with the recycling process.

The Department of Education is on board with this effort and working together to develop a curriculum where students will learn about the importance of recycling in the class room as well as hands on field trips.  Getting our youth excited about recycling at a young age is one way to ensure that the next generation has a better handle on reducing waste, preserving resources and ultimately benefiting our society as a whole.

Cardboard Theft on the Rise in NYC

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

Cardboard theft or "cardboard poaching" as it’s not being referred to as, has become a huge issue. It is a multimillion dollar recycling crime and is being seen more and more frequently because for many, stealing
cardboard means quick cash.

The way it is supposed to work in New York City is that approximately 150,000 commercial establishments have contracts with waste removal companies who are licensed with the Business Integrity Commission. They are authorized haulers who have scheduled pick-up times with these businesses who pick up waste with professional trucks. However, New York is not the only city this is occurring in. There have been reports of cardboard theft in California, Virginia, Connecticut, Georgia and Miami.

Cardboard thieves are renting trucks from U-Haul and Penske or unmarked vehicles and are driving down streets and quickly picking up as many bales of cardboard as they can find. They are also going to large stores such as Costco or shopping areas and scaling dumpsters left outside to retrieve cardboard.

What do you think about this issue? Do you think these thieves can be stopped? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page, linked HERE

MetroCard May Cost $1 Extra Soon!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

The MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) has recently proposed a new idea.  The company is thinking about charging subway and bus passengers an extra $1 for each new MetroCard they buy!

The MTA is hoping that the “green fee” will encourage MTA passengers to refill existing cards instead of buying new ones. The MTA is hoping to reduce the amount of MetroCards that are printed.  A spokesperson for the MTA reported that around 160 million cards are printed each year at about a $9.5 million cost.

What do you think about this new idea from the MTA? Do you think passengers will refill their cards or pay $1 for a new card? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page, linked HERE
