Going Green Will Help the MTA but Cost You!

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

The MTA has decided that in order to go green and stop printing millions of MetroCards, they are now considering charging a $1 for each new MetroCard you purchase. They are calling this a “green fee” and believe it will encourage riders to hold onto their existing cards and refill that as the amount decreases.

The goal of this action is to reduce the amount of MetroCards that are printed. By doing this action it will decrease all the metro cards that are always on the ground in the subways and city, but is now costing the commuters more money. The MTA believes that by putting a cost of replacing your MetroCards is a good act for the environment and will reduce the liter in the stations.

A newly purchased MetroCard usually doesn’t expire for about 12 months, and until that expiration date the MetroCard can be repeatedly refilled without worrying to pay a $1 every time you buy a new card.  A surcharge will not be imposed when a rider with an expired MetroCard is buying a new one.

Many citizens are having a hard time agreeing with this proposed idea but in the end this can be beneficial for all involved. By enforcing that every time you lose your card or throw it out, you have to purchase a new one it will make the commuters more aware of where they place their MetroCard and how they handle it.  If you are a daily commuter this will help you if you are smart about using your card, and if you are not so frequent MTA rider this policy will not affect you as much as it does to others.

Cardboard Theft Continues

In Smithtown, Long Island, three men have been charged in a recycling scheme which left the town without thousands of dollars in revenue.

Two employees at a garbage carting firm called Jody Enterprises Inc. are being accused of diverting cardboard and paper waste that was meant for the Town of Smithtown recycling plant. They were instead selling it for cash payments to DeMatteo Salvage in West Babylon.

Cardboard theft has become a huge issue in New York, as well as many other cities around the country.

The Green Building Market is Growing

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656

A report recently released by McGraw-Hill Construction, which is part of the McGraw-Hill Companies, estimated that the green homes share of the construction market was 17% in 2011, which equates to $17 billion, and is expected to rise 29-38% by 2016.

This expected rise in the percentage of green homes could potentially spell out an $87-$114 billion opportunity. This is based off of a five-year forecast for residential construction. The report reveals that two of the key factors driving this market growth are the fact that green homes are seen as having higher quality and that they save consumers money (http://goo.gl/WoXTR).

“In the current residential market, there is an enormous need to differentiate your homes for consumers,” says Harvey Bernstein, Vice President of Industry Insights and Alliances at McGraw-Hill Construction. “When builders are able to offer homes that not only are green, but also offer the combination of higher quality and better value, they have a major competitive edge over those building traditional homes.”

Some of the factors that are driving the growth of green home building are that it’s a higher quality for both new home builders and remodelers, customers are strongly value-driven and higher first costs for building green are noted by a much lower percentage of builders as an obstacle now than they were reported four years ago.

NYC Department of Sanitation Names Sustainability Director

Maspeth, NY 718-416-1656
According to multiple industry sources, Ron Gonen, co-founder and former CEO of Recyclebank, will be named the first-ever sustainability director for New York City’s Department of Sanitation. This newly created position will focus on waste reduction, reuse, composting and recycling initiatives.

His official title will be Deputy Commissioner for Sustainability. He will be required to lead the Bureau of Waste Prevention, its staff of 29 workers and a $30 million annual budget.
While still in graduate school, Gonen and friend Patrick FitzGerald launched Recyclebank as a pilot program in Philadelphia in 2004, working to convince households that there were financial incentives to recycling. Recyclebank now has rewards-for-recycling programs available to more than three million members in the United States and United Kingdom (http://goo.gl/kGWDf).

New York City has a plan to double the city’s landfill diversion rate by the year 2017. Gonen will work with Mayor Bloomberg’s office and the Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability to meet the solid waste goals of PlaNYC. He will also advise DoS Commissioner John Doherty and staff on initiatives within the department, which include reducing emissions from DSNY’s fleet, and exploring alternatives to landfills for city refuse.

Gonen stepped down as CEO of Recyclebank in June 2011 but stayed on the board of directors.

Contact us at Boro Wide at 718-416-1656 if you have any questions about recycling or landfills. We will answer any questions you may have!

Eco-Friendly Products: Are they actually eco-friendly?

Consumers seem to be buying more "eco-friendly" products, regardless of wehther or not the product is actually eco-friendly.
Perception Research Services found that 36% of shoppers in 2011 said they would choose environmentally friendly packaging compared with 28% in 2010, according to a news release (wasterecyclingnews.com).
Almost 59% of all shoppers said seeing the environmental claims on packaging positively impacts their behavior to either buy more of their usual brands or switch to others. A huge amount of shoppers said they get frustrated with the way companies promote environmental claims. 26% said there isn’t enough environmental information; 20% are confused by all the different environmental claims; and 22% don’t know which packages are best for the environment.
"We´re seeing a great opportunity for manufacturers to provide truly value-added packaging to their target shoppers by making it more environmentally friendly -- primarily in the form of recyclability and recycled content -- and clearly communicating these aspects," Jonathan Asher, executive vice president at Ft. Lee, N.J.-based Perception Research Services, said in a news release. "We have seen that it is vital to get both the message right as well as the delivery [of the message], because one without the other will create a missed opportunity," (wasterecyclingnews.com).
