Like most habits, the sooner children are taught and encouraged to recycle, the easier it will be for them to follow through with it when they are older. However, being that recycling is probably not on the top of their to do list when they could be playing with their latest video game or spending time with their friends, you as the adult will need to make it as interesting and appealing to them as possible. See below for a few ways that you can start to introduce the three Rs to your little ones at home –

1. Reading: If reading a bedtime story to your child is part of your daily routine, take advantage of this time and choose a story that discusses the environment or describes the act of recycling taking place. Especially if you can find a book where your child’s favorite character is recycling, there is a good possibility they will start to mimic the actions on their own.

2. Decorating: Since you will need a recycling bin or two before you can even get into the specifics, we suggest making it a family affair and have your children decorate the bins you’ve put aside for paper, plastic, glass and more. Although they aren’t actually recycling yet, this is a great place to start when it comes to differentiating the materials they should keep an eye out for.

3. Practicing: Practice makes perfect, doesn’t it? Once your children are old enough to truly understand the act of recycling and why it is important, we highly recommend practicing it with them as often as possible. For example, take a few minutes each day or week to travel around your home and see how many unwanted items your children can identify as recyclable.

As new versions of electronics and other gadgets are introduced, we tend to take the ones we already have and toss them to the side. In fact, all too often our old cell phones, computers, video games and more end up under the bed or in our closets, collecting dust for years to come.

When it comes time to finally let go of our once beloved electronics, many people are unsure of whether they belong in the trash or the recycling bin due to the nature of their composition. With help from Mashable, we've put together a few ways that you can dispose of your old electronics in environmentally friendly ways:

Tech Company Recycling Programs:
Evidently, most big tech companies have their own recycling programs specifically designed for those who need to dispose of their old products. For example, Apple will accept old or unwanted products that you no longer use and will either recycle it for you or send you an Apple Store Gift Card if the product still has any remaining value.

Donate:
There are several non-profit and refurbishing programs that will happily accept unwanted items and distribute them to those who need them. Check out Cell Phones for Soldiers, Call2Recycle or the Verizon HopeLine if you're looking to donate any old cell phones.

Trade Ins:
Several websites provide the option for you to sell or trade in your old gadgets for money or gift cards. If your product still works and could be of use to someone else, consider this option and you'll get something in return!
  
DIY Projects:
Last but not least, if you can't bring yourself to part with your device, repurpose it into an item that you can continue to use!

NYC's Lincoln Square Implements New Recycling Program

As we step into spring, New York City officials are continuing to implement waste management programs in an effort to reduce the amount of trash left on our streets. The latest development comes from the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District (BID) and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY). Together, these organizations seek to make NYC's Lincoln Square one of the cleanest neighborhoods in the city.

To encourage people to keep the streets free of waste, the BID has strategically placed 22 recycling cans throughout Lincoln Square; 11 for paper and cardboard and 11 for glass, metal and plastic. Since NYC is famous for being the city that never sleeps, people can be seen walking around with materials such as paper, plastic and aluminum all throughout the day. Members of the sanitation department suggest that incorporating these bins into our city's waste management program will make it easier for New Yorkers and visitors to recycle their paper, bottles and cans when they're on the go.

Mayor Bloomberg Plans to Double Down on Recycling

New York City has made significant progress in it's recycling efforts over the last couple of years, but to continue the progress they need capture the attention and interest of the market.  Mayor Bloomberg has done a great job reducing the city's carbon footprint, he has been a leader among  big city mayors on this important issue. 


Recently Bloomberg has launched an aggressive plan to virtually double the amount of material the city will recycle in its residential program, to 30% by 2017, with a public campaign called "Recycle Everything" that includes bus and subway ads to raise awareness among New Yorkers.  His efforts include the idea to increase food-waste composting, which send a powerful message that the city intends to do everything it can to get more materials out of the waste stream.  This is a great push toward the greater good at the end of his term as mayor, but what we need is for the next mayor to pick up where he left off.  For more information on recycling plans for NYC please visit http://goo.gl/g6fiDq.

WasteCon 2013

During the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) 2013 WasteCon Conference in Long Beach, CA, a technical session title "New York City's Waste Conversion Technology Pilot- is the Technology Ripe Enough for the Big Apple?"  discussed where the city is at in the evaluation of technologies to handle the estimated 50,000 tons of waste and recyclables the city generates each day. 
It was determined that the city needs to implement a new solid waste management plan for its waste handling.  The key goals include:

• Increase recycling and build a recycling processing facility in Brooklyn;
• End long-haul trucking and maximize exporting waste out of state via rail and barge;
• Develop containerized facilities for DSNY-managed waste in each borough;
• Stabilize costs through 20-year contracts; and
• Evaluate and build pilot plants for alternative municipal solid waste (MSW) technologies.

The City Can Recycle a lot More Than it is

A report by the Alliance for Greater New York determined that the city's 2,000-plus garbage collectors often have routes that intersect each other.  The report suggests reducing the number of trash-collecting companies and improving environmental standards.  The report also found that the city could recycle or compost more than 90% of commercial waste, although the current rate is only at 40%.  This means that of the 3.2 million tons of commercial waste generated each year, 2 million tons are buried in landfills or burned in incinerators

New Yorkers already take a progressive approach toward recycling.  It is a task that is taken very seriously, especially in NYC.  There is always room to improve on our efforts, which is why Mayor Bloomberg is implementing the first major recycling campaign in 20 years.  He is encouraging New Yorkers to "Recycle Everything" in an ad campaign that he has slapped on subways, buses, newsstands, in newspapers and magazines, online and on the radio.  This campaign follows the recent expansion of the City's curbside recycling program in April and the launch of organics collection pilots across the five boroughs.  This is all in an effort of the main goal to double the amount of waste that New Yorkers divert from landfills by 2017.  Reaching this goal has added incentive, which will save taxpayers at least $60 million.

Did you know that the symbol was created from a contest? In 1970 the International Design Conference proposed a nationwide contest for high school and college students to continue the growth and awareness for Earth Day.

Gary Anderson, a senior at the University of Southern California, won the contest with his design based off the Mobius loop. The three, green arrows that are chasing each other into a triangle, that we know today.

The 3 arrows represent the 3 steps of the recycling process.

The First Arrow – Collection of materials.

The Second Arrow – The manufacturing process.

The Third Arrow – The purchase and use of the product.

CTR Challenge!

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) posted their Challenge #2 for New Uses for CRT monitors.

The challenge will award $10,000 to the best proposal for the best use of recycled Cathode Ray Tubes, which once made up most televisions and computers. More recently, LEDs and LCDs make up the standard for computer monitors and TVs and the trade groups expect more than 2 billion pounds of CRT TVs and monitors to enter the recycling stream in the near future.

NYC to See 30 New Recycling Stations Added to Times Square

Mayor Bloomberg and the Times Square Alliance, in a commitment to double the city’s recycling from 15 percent to 30 percent by 2017, have partnered with BigBelly Solar and Alcoa Foundation to bring 30 new BigBelly recycling stations to the tourist center. “We want to encourage visitors to Times Square to recycle so we are trying to make recycling easier,” said Bloomberg.

The units each have 3 sections: Cans & Bottles, Garbage, and Paper. Solar energy is used to compact the trash and notify staff when they are full.

Home repair is usually replacing old work. With the new work comes tons of leftover debris. Here are materials from leftover home repair that most don’t know can be recycled!

• Shingles - Asphalt shingles can be recycled to pave roads.
• Drywall - Many facilities will accept drywall, as long as they are free of foreign objects and lead based paint.
• Paint - Drop off extra paint to a local Household Hazardous Waste facility or donate it to a good-cause. Don’t through it away! It’s hazardous to the environment!
• Brick - Old brick can be ground to make concrete or resold as aged brick
• Carpet - Ask your new carpet dealer about some options for recycling.

Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert to be Held This Week at MSG!

This Wednesday, December 12^th, many huge names in the music industry are coming out to support Hurricane Sandy victims.

The 12-12-12 concert will broadcasting live from New York City’s Madison Square Garden at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to the Robin Hood Relief Fund which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that serve families and individuals in the regions which were affected the most by the storm.

Some of performers for this Wednesday’s show include Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, The Who, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & the E. Street Band and Chris Martin.

NYC Taking Sugary Drink Ban Further

Last month, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg but a ban on extra-large sugary drinks. The ban was being placed in effort to reduce obesity in our country. Now, New York City is taking it one step further.

Mayor Bloomberg would also like to ban sugary and fatty foods in hospitals. This ban in hospital cafeterias would eliminate deep fryers, make salad options mandatory and allow only healthy snacks to be consumed.

New Taxi Decals to Keep Cyclists Safe in NYC!

Today, the New York City DOT announced that there will be 26,000 decals for the city’s 13,000 taxis as part of an initiative to remind cab riders that opening their doors without proper caution can be extremely dangerous to cyclists!

New York City DOT is hoping these decals remind passengers to “LOOK” before opening their doors to exit their cab. According to the DOT, there have been a few cyclists killed in door accidents/crashes in the last five years.

Going Green Will Help the MTA but Cost You!

The MTA has decided that in order to go green and stop printing millions of MetroCards, they are now considering charging a $1 for each new MetroCard you purchase. They are calling this a “green fee” and believe it will encourage riders to hold onto their existing cards and refill that as the amount decreases.

The goal of this action is to reduce the amount of MetroCards that are printed. By doing this action it will decrease all the metro cards that are always on the ground in the subways and city, but is now costing the commuters more money. The MTA believes that by putting a cost of replacing your MetroCards is a good act for the environment and will reduce the liter in the stations.

A newly purchased MetroCard usually doesn’t expire for about 12 months, and until that expiration date the MetroCard can be repeatedly refilled without worrying to pay a $1 every time you buy a new card.  A surcharge will not be imposed when a rider with an expired MetroCard is buying a new one.

Many citizens are having a hard time agreeing with this proposed idea but in the end this can be beneficial for all involved. By enforcing that every time you lose your card or throw it out, you have to purchase a new one it will make the commuters more aware of where they place their MetroCard and how they handle it.  If you are a daily commuter this will help you if you are smart about using your card, and if you are not so frequent MTA rider this policy will not affect you as much as it does to others.

NHL Lockout!

The NHL is cancelling all pre- season games through Sept 30^th. 

   

The last time the NHL saw a lockout was the 2004-2005 season and now seven years later the CBA and the NHLPA have done it again.  The talk of the lockout for the ’12-13 seasons has been in the works since the previous season but the players and fans were hopeful that they could come to an agreement before the season started. On September 16, 2012 at 12am the news broke that the lockout was official.

  

The owners of the National Hockey League declared the lockout of the beginning of the ’12-13 season, which was scheduled to start on October 11, 2012, which then proceeded to cancel the scheduled preseason games through September 30.

The players are unable to play in the states due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which is one of the reasons why the pre-season is not able to undergo.  The New York Islanders had two home preseason games schedule for the month of September, against the Edmonton Oilers in Regina SK, and the Ottawa Senators in Barrie, ON. The Islanders are scheduled to play the first hockey game in the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn on October 2, 2012 but with the lockout the chance of this happening is unforeseen at this point in time.

 The New York Rangersat this time are continuing to skate at the MSG Training Center in Greenburgh, while some of the players are thinking their offers from the European teams. The Rangers acquired Rick Nash during the free agency period and now due to the lockout Nash intend to play for Davos during the lockout. As of now some of the Rangers players are not entertaining the idea of playing overseas but if the lockout is going to last for a long time they may have to go where they need to play for time being.

There is no definite answer to when the CBA and NHLPA will agree to the new terms and allow the league to start the season, but the fans, players and coaches can be hopeful that there will be a 2012-2012 season.
